On Thursday 28th September at 3:15pm we held a free SchoolNet webinar which was presented by Fiona Beal a teacher, writer and ICT trainer from Cape Town. The webinar was entitled ‘Digital storytelling as a means to encourage students to write' Webinar description Fiona says: 'The world is changing. The way we write is changing! This is where digital storytelling comes in. Digital storytelling is a great way to give your students a creative way to tell their stories, and to get them to see the stories all around them in everyday life. In this webinar we will look at an overview of digital storytelling including how the Internet is changing writing. We’ll look at some key resources as well as useful free storytelling tools that one can use. Lastly we’ll discuss some simple ways of introducing digital storytelling in your classroom as well as some more advanced methods of creating a digital story. We are pleased to announce that our next free webinar, ‘ Digital storytelling as a means to encourage students to write' will be held this coming Thursday 28th September 2017 at 3:15pm (GMT+2). Our speaker will be Fiona Beal, teacher, writer and ICT trainer from Cape Town. Fiona says: ‘On 8th September we celebrated UNESCO’s International Literacy Day and this year's theme is "Literacy in a Digital World“. The world is changing. The way we write is changing! This is where digital storytelling comes in. Digital storytelling is "using the tools of digital media to craft, record, share and value the stories of individuals and communities, in ways that improve our lives" ( Center for Digital Storytelling ). It can be described as a way of combining storytelling with a combination of digital images, digital text, audio narration, video and music, to communicate information about a specific theme or topic. Yes, we are excited about our four international keynote speakers who will be presenting at the SchoolNet ICT in the Classroom Conference on 5-7 October at Brescia House in Johannesburg. Submitted by Fiona Beal Blogging is a great way to engage and inspire learners in the classroom. A blog is a web publishing tool that allows authors to easily self-publish and share text, artwork, videos, images, links to other blogs or Web sites, and much more. For several years now all the learners in my various Grade 4 – 7 classes have had their own blogs. We use these as digital portfolios and also as a way to learn digital citizenship and courtsesy on the Internet. Since we are a G Suite school, the free Blogger platform comes with G Suite Apps which means that blogs can be monitored more easily. However, running student blogs takes up a lot of a teacher’s time. On Thursday 31st August at 3:15pm we held a free SchoolNet webinar which was presented by Phuti Ragophala a teacher from Limpop who is well-known in many international and local education circles and also a Microsoft MIEExpert Educator. The webinar is entitlled, "Explore the Chekhov app for online writing' . Phuti believes that using the the Chekhov app for reading and writing is a great way to fight illiteracy. Webinar description Phuti says, "The Chekhov is one of the free apps offered by Microsoft for educators to access and use to enhance, transform and drive teaching and learning. Traditionally authors were known to be very academic people but today, through the Chekhov app, even primary school learners can write and publish story books online. The Chekhov app enables learners to be the solution seekers of the challenges that affect their communities. Illiteracy is one of the major challenges that need to be addressed in our country..
